New Update In Google Maps, Now Explore Earth At New Level
A new update is introduced by Google in Google Maps: the Earth will no longer shown as a flat surface when you will zoom all the way out.
To represent the Earth more accurately Google Maps represents the Earth as a Globe. The research team of Google featured that with the new 3D mode, "Greenlands projection is no longer the size of Africa". This change will only available for desktop interfaces.
Before this new update, Google Maps uses Mercator projection, which represents Earth as flat surface. This style makes simple and easier to print onto maps, which shows skewed image of Earth. Around the equator, objects are shown respective to each other and around the poles, they are shown larger. A good example is the size of Greenland and Africa. On Google previous map, Greenland is displayed larger than Africa, but in reality Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland.
In 2009, Google company employee said that they use Mercator map because it is helpful to support different angles of road. He also clarified that, "The first launch of Maps actually did not use Mercator, and streets in high latitude places like Stockholm did not meet at right angles on the map the way they do in reality".
